Tranquility found at the base of Kilimanjaro

Most travelers head to Moshi as a stopover before tackling the momentous Mount Kilimanjaro. However, for those who have the time, the city is worth more than just a pit stop while visiting Tanzania.

A largely agricultural town, the city of Moshi is surrounded by bountiful fields of sugar cane, ripening banana plants and wheat, as well as large coffee plantations. Unlike many cities near Kilimanjaro's base, Moshi's other industries give the town a rather tranquil vibe, providing a great spot to wind down after the long trek as well.

Found near the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, Moshi is also a great city to base one's wildlife-based travels around. Moshi lies close to the Northern Tourist Circuit, and so provides a number of great chances and locations to catch some of Africa's big five.

A visit to Moshi may also assist the city with its sustainability efforts. The city is currently awaiting funds from the Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture program, which is expected to give the city access to much more sustainable farming practices and better healthcare protocols.
