Best places to go on an extreme adventure

Adventure traveling brings out the thrill seeker in every person and often presents opportunities that you can’t find anywhere else.

There are plenty of things around the world that can make your heart beat faster and get your adrenaline pumping. Wildjunket.com recommends some of the most extreme things you can do while traveling, ranging from dirt biking to shark diving.

While in New Zealand, try spelunking - also known as caving or potholing. Explore underground cave systems by climbing, rappelling and crawling through small spaces before tubing down a cavernous waterfall. The news source recommends the Ruakuri and Waitomo Caves as the top two to explore.

If you are looking for an underwater adventure, get face to face with a great white shark. At Shark Alley near Gansbaai, South Africa, there are plenty of dive operators that will allow you to swim in a cage in the middle of shark-infested waters.

In the Thai jungles of Chiangmai and Phuket there are plenty of things to do, from dirt-biking through the rugged trails to zorbing. Zorbing is a new form of thrill seeking, which basically involves a person in the middle of a clear plastic ball which then rolls down a hill or trail.

Floating restaurants the next big thing in eco-friendly travel

Being an eco-friendly traveler is becoming a big concern for those who take adventure travel trips. One innovative idea is making eating out an environmentally friendly and unique experience.

Floating restaurants are popping up around the world and are serving sustainable seafood, in an effort to tackle the over-fishing crisis, according to CNN.

The first of these boats was the "SS Plastic Dining Room," which was launched in Vancouver, Canada, earlier this year, reports the news source. Because of the success of the initial project, plans for floating restaurants are popping up in major cities around the world, including Auckland, New Zealand and Cape Town, South Africa.

"We hope that after the first generation of chefs graduate from culinary school armed with a full knowledge of sustainable fishing, then we'll soon start to see a major shift in what's being served on people's plates," Shannon Ronalds, who established the foundation in March of this year, told the news source. "The dishes have been crafted to display some important and often overlooked aspects of sustainable fishing."

Pudding in South Africa becomes a popular (and adventurous) treat

A culinary adventure in Cape Town, South Africa, could be the perfect break from the week-long desert and mountain treks in the countryside.

Recently, Kari's Malva Pudding, a gourmet dessert, has been taking American's taste buds by storm and it's not too hard to see why.

It's not pudding in the traditional sense that most American's think of - it's a "dense, moist, rich cake with a caramelly flavor and a hint of apricots," according to a statement released by Malva Pudding.
Some of the best restaurants in Cape Town and Johannesburg have the dessert, which is named after its Dutch Afrikaans creator. The dish is usually made with eggs, butter, sugar, milk, flour, cream, apricot jam and a little splash of vinegar.

"Oprah Winfrey served it at the first Christmas dinner for her girls' academy in South Africa, and Nelson Mandela has said it's his favorite dessert," said Kari Mansfeld, the founder of the pudding company.

An adventure based in the goodness of South African grapes

Travelers seeking a culinary adventure should head straight to the South African Winelands, located just an hour outside of Cape Town.

Miles and miles of vineyards stretch along in the rural area of South Africa that offers adventures for the palette.
Centered around Stellenbosch, the Winelands are a historic land surrounded by rolling hills and good tilled earth.

The two best areas to visit are Annandale Road and Helshoogte Pass, according to Fodor's travel guides.
Annandale is "foodie heaven," according to the trip experts. "The road brings you up close to the purple mountains of Helderberg and many of the country's finest wining and dining establishments."

Peter Falk and Uva Mira are two of the best vineyards in the region. Falk has comfortable sofas and a green space to enjoy tastings while Uva Mira has beautiful landscapes and an "award-winning Sauvignon Blanc," states Fodor's.

In Helshoogte, try the modern Tokara winery or the mint Cabernet at Thelema.
Sampling new grapes is always an exciting adventure as travelers never know what the wine will taste like until they've tried it.

South Africa offers adventure travel at high altitudes

South Africa's Table Mountain has been declared the most recognized site in Cape Town and the gateway to Africa by the New Open World Corporation. The mountain, based on its diverse flora and fauna, incredible views and population of rare animal species, has been selected as a finalist in the New Seven Wonders of Nature campaign, according to the organization's website.

Visitors to Table Mountain can ascend the flat-topped peaks of its summit 1,000 meters above sea level by cable car, and enjoy views that have been described as phenomenal and spectacular by Lonely Planet. Those who are seeking more extreme adventure travel can choose to hike up the mountain, but should keep in mind that conditions can become treacherous quickly, which has led more than one hiker to perish on the trek.

Once explorers have reached the top of Table Mountain, the extremely adventurous can abseil down its side and experience what it feels like to rappel into pure vertical space. Marketed as an adrenaline-pumping adventure by Abseil Africa, a tour group that offers the activity, this adventuresome endeavor can be enjoyed by inexperienced hikers and is guaranteed to be safe by the company.

Conquer your fears by swimming with the sharks

Sharks are a major source of anxiety for many individuals. However, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History's ichthyology department, the risk of being attacked by these aquatic animals is less than getting struck by lightening, being eaten by an alligator or bitten by a rabid animal in New York City. In order to get over a fear of sharks - also known as galeophobia - one should consider swimming alongside them.

A fantastic place to swim with sharks is South Africa. In the country's many coastal cities and resort towns, there are many tour companies that will take divers down into shark infested waters and allow them to interact with the animals. Individuals can choose to observe the fish from a cage or swim up close to them if they are brave enough.

Conquering one's fears can be a very challenging undertaking, and as such, it is best to plan this shark-themed trip to South Africa with a small group of adventure travelers that are as interested in putting their fears to rest as you are.

Swim with penguins at Boulders Beach

If you are looking to head away from Cape Town for a few days, don't miss out on a visit to Boulders Beach. This is the perfect location for relaxing and rejuvinating - alone or with friends and family.
Make sure you visit in summer when the waters of False Bay are warm for swimming and protected from the wind and waves. If you get down there early enough in the day you might sneak in a swim amongst the African penguin colony who parade about the cove. These little creatures are great fun to watch and can be seen wading in the waters and playing about on the sand. Be sure not to feed or touch them - although they are only 60cm in length and weigh between 2.4 and 3.6kg, they have sharp teeth! After you've cooled off in the water, enjoy a gentle stroll along the boardwalks and dunes and take in the scenery, a perfect place to watch the waves, and time, pass by.
Boulders Beach is perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway. You can find plenty of accomodation at nearby Simon's Town.

The heart of the Winelands in Paarl

Found amid South Africa's infamous Winelands, Paarl offers travelers unequivocal access to the region's many lush vineyards and some of the country's most overlooked cultural accolades.

While the wine itself in the region may be hard to pass up, Paarl-area spas are very resourceful in their wine-making process, so guests should explore the vinotherapy options available at many local spas. The process involves rubbing the skin with the pips and pulps of the grapes, a fruit known to have many healthful benefits. When offered a Shiraz body rub, travelers should readily take the offer.

Paarl's names comes from the three granite domes of the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. Said to shine like pearls after a rainfall, hikes amid this rocky terrain are a fun outing for the day in any type of weather, and can be a nice escape from the winery route.

Cuisine in Paarl is highlighted for its fresh ingredients, so guests can feel good about ordering chow at many local eateries. One of the more famous is Noop, whose local wine and salad pairings leave diners feeling full, relaxed and revitalized.

The New Johannesburg

Long known as the stopover city for safari travellers, Johannesburg is increasingly becoming known as a cultural and cosmopolitan capital. Beyond the busy corporate centre there are a myriad of places and events to satisfy any age or interest.

Top five spots in Johannesburg:

1 Apartheid Museum
This special museum follows the rise and fall of apartheid. You'll see film footage, photographs and artefacts illustrating the events and human stories of this significant time.

2 Johannesburg Zoo
Opening in 1904 as a small public park with just a few animals, Johannesburg Zoo has grown to become one of the most popular public places in Johannesburg. Head along on one of the zoo's family days and you'll enjoy animal encounters, talks, games and more. And keep your eye out for the new baby giraffe!

3 Heritage Walks
Grab a map and take a stroll. One of the best ways to take in the new sites (and history) of a town is by walking. The Parktown & Westcliff Heritage Trust conducts weekly tours of old Johannesburg. If you prefer getting more in touch with nature - Johannesburg has more than 2300 parks.

4 Gold Mine Pub
Enjoy a beer at the world's deepest pub - a quarter of a kilometre underground! Inside what was formerly one of the world's richest and deepest gold mines, the pub is now a part of the historical amusement park, Gold Reef City.

5 Soweto
A tour of Soweto is a must for every visitor to Johannesburg. Although most well known for the violent riots against apartheid in 1976, Soweto has now become an emerging hub of fashion, dance and culture.  Be sure to try some authentic African dishes at one of the local restaurants.

Uncover the last members of a legacy at Addo Elephant National Park

Once dominating much of South Africa's landscape, elephants from the country's Eastern Cape population have been severely hunted for their ivory. Home to the last remaining members of the region, the Addo Elephant National Park provides travelers with the chance to visit the members of a once-epic animal tribe.

With only 16 elephants remaining in 1931, the Eastern Cape population's numbers are more than 550 strong today. The park's wildlife now includes a dizzying array of different species, as well. Because this area of the country supports a variety of shorter shrubs, visitors are nearly guaranteed several chances to see lions or leopards as they relax in the mid-morning sun, see packs of buffalo grazing, or watch as rhinos trot along the dusty terrain.
Travelers with patience will rejoice at Addo's diverse tortoise population, which includes such unique varieties as the parrot-beaked tortoise and the leopard tortoise.

Although the plant life may be short in stature, the park's habitats support more than 500 species of flora as well. Botany enthusiasts will find the greatest plant diversity on the Speckboom trail, which is kept off-limits from the park's wildlife.

The Mahale Mountains rise 5000 feet from the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, capturing the clouds and creating their own microclimate. The world’s longest and least explored lake, Tanganyika offers a 450 miles of blue water running down the very heart of Africa. The lake has fascinated generations of explorers: Livingstone, Stanley, Burton and Speke. Rare butterflies flit through the forests on its shores. The rampant tropical rain forest is home to the largest group of free-living chimpanzees in the world, all habituated to human contact. They can be approached to within a few feet as they feed, groom and wrestle across the forest floor. The chimps occasionally pass through camp and don’t touch a thing. In addition to chimps, the Mahale Forest has eight other species of primate as well as bushbuck, warthog, buffalo, civet and genet cats. Palmnut vultures, fish eagles and giant goliath herons are common.
