People who like to go on adventure travel trips are aware that there are certain sites that are at risk of disappearing. These places are off the beaten path, and are the perfect place to truly learn about a culture.

Head over to Lamu, Kenya to see one of the oldest and best preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa, according to National Geographic. The UNESCO World Heritage site dates back to the 12th century, and still features the traditional Swahili culture and architecture. The major threat to Lamu is the development and proposed oil project.

Head to Maluti, India and visit the remaining terra-cotta temples that were built during the Pala dynasty. Just 72 of the original 108 temples remain intact, according to the news source. The temples were built by those who worshipped the Hindu goddess Mowlakshi. At the site, there are other temples dedicated to Shiva, Durga, Kali and Vishnu. Poor drainage and overgrown vegetation are taking its toll on the complex, which is starting to destroy the temples beyond repair.
